Jefferson County, a land of forested mountains and seashores, is located in the central portion of the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington. American settlers petitioned successfully for a county government and the Oregon Territorial Legislature proclaimed Jefferson a county December 22, 1852, shortly before Washington Territory was established by Congress in 1853.
