Skagit County, a land of Puget Sound islands, reclaimed tidal lands, wide valleys, and forested Cascade Mountains, is located in northwestern Washington. The Washington Territorial Legislature created Skagit County on November 28, 1883. It was named after its most important geographic feature, the waterway and the wide, fertile valley of the Skagit River.
