Skamania County, located in the southwestern portion of the state, lies entirely within the Cascade Mountains and is bordered on the south by the Columbia River Gorge. Skamania a Native-American word meaning "swift river" and refers to the swift currents of the Columbia River. The county was created on March 5, 1854 by the Washington Territorial Legislature.
