City Name History:   Site of Rainier State School for the mentally retarded, it was first known as Perkins Prairie after an early settler; was next called White River Siding; and in 1888 was given its present name to honor the superintendent of the Ellensburg-Tacoma division of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
