City Name
History:
|
Situated
on the Carbon River, the town derived its name from the stream which, in
turn, was named after coal was discovered along its banks in the
1870s. It was a model community owned, planned, and operated by the
Pacific Coast Coal Co., which installed paved streets and sewers and
repainted the homes (average rent $14.00 a month). When the company ceased
operation in the late 1920s, the pumps were removed, flooding five miles
of collieries beyond reclamation. |
