City of Centralia

City Visited #:   149
County:   Lewis

City Name History:   The city was founded by George Washington, mulatto son of a Virginia slave and a white serving girl. Washington settled at the townsite in 1852 and named it Centerville in 1875. Because of confusion of names with Centerville in Klickitat County, a public meeting accepted the recommendation of a former resident of Centralia, Illinois, who suggested the name of his home town as being reminiscent of - but more distinctive than - Centerville.
