City Name

No
official version of the definition of the name exists in the
community. It was changed circa 1890 by pressure of Mrs.
D.C. Cowgill, wife of the first postmaster, from its original name of
Kidd - which she felt was inappropriate. However, historical
records credit her with different explanations of the name source -
river named in a poem she read; adaptation of chateau roi
(French, meaning "royal place"); restoration of the original
Native-American name for the site. |
