City Name History:   City and adjacent geographic points - river, falls, butte, mountains - named for Lake Chelan, which the Native-Americans appropriately called Tsill-ane or "deep water." The 55-mile-long lake is 1,500 feet deep, which places its bottom 400 feet blow sea level. The city of Chelan was established as Fort Chelan in 1879 by the U.S. Army, which laid out government townsite with streets 100 feet wide.
