Springs lost out to Spokane Falls as the seat of Spokane County so
residents shifted their goal from government to higher education. They renamed the city for Benjamin P. Cheney, one of the founders of the
Great Northern Railroad, and solicited his support for an academy. He responded with $10,000 and the resultant school, Cheney Academy,
because one of the state's first normal schools and eventually Eastern
Washington State College.
