City Name
History:
|
Older
and smaller than its abutting neighbor Aberdeen, the city was settled in
1859 by the James Karr family, and the present name was applied to both
settlement and river. The name is a contraction of the
Native-American term ho-qui-umpts, meaning "hungry for
wood," and refers to the driftwood at the river's mouth. |
