City Name
History:
|
Derived
from the Native-American word isquowh of uncertain meaning, the
name is currently that of a town, a creek, a mountain, and a valley.
Originally the town was known as Squak, a corruption of the
Native-American name; next as Gilman for coal-mine operator D.H.
Gilman. It was also known as Olney and Englewood before settlers
agreed to the present name in 1890. |
