This
town, destined to be flooded by the backwater of Coulee Dam, was
relocated four miles north of its original site by consolidating with
the smaller community of Meyers Falls. The town is named for
nearby Kettle Falls on the Columbia River. Two languages,
Native-American and French, gave birth to its name. The
Native-Americans called the falls Ilth-kapc, meaning "tightly woven
cooking basket" and "net," as they fished there with such
kettle-nets. The French traders called the falls La Chaudiere
because the water boiled like water in a heated pot or cauldron. Both terms were quickly translated by early settlers into the present
name for the falls and river, and eventually the town. |
