Originally
known as Woodland after Isaac Woods, who settled the area in 1852, the
community boasted two large sawmills, a resort hotel, the region's
biggest horse-racing track, and a 10-by-12-foot long schoolhouse in the
1890s. Believing the prestige of a post office would stimulate
further growth, Woods submitted a petition through his attorney, O.C.
Lacey of Olympia. Postal officials rejected the railroad station
name of Woodland as duplicating a town name in Cowlitz County. So
Lacey, who doubled as real estate developer and who had land interests in the
area, substituted his own name on the application to expedite
matters. |
