Lake
and town are named for former Hudson's Bay Co. employee Etienne Eduard
Laliberte, who, under the name Steve Liberty, homesteaded on the lake
shore. Liberty and nearby Newman Lake both are named for
French-Canadian farmers who anglicized the spelling of their surnames,
worked for Hudson's Bay Co., and married daughters of Antoine La Plante,
operator of the first Spokane River ferry at Irvin. |
