City Name
History:
|
Named
in 1881 as the site of a Northern Pacific Railroad water tank and
section house. Exact origin of the name has been lost, but the
three most frequently cited sources, in order of probability, are: after
a woman cook with the track-laying crew; for an early settler in the
county; as a whimsical honor for singer Jenny Lind, the Swedish
nightingale. The Scandinavian influence of the name's origin was
heightened in 1888 by the Nielson brothers, who platted the town in such
a manner that the initial letters of its street names spelled their
surname. |
