Eliza
included the island in his Isla y Archipelago de San Juan. Wilkes
named it for Commodore Isaac Chauncy, over-all commander of United
States forces on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. Kellett,
in redoing charts in 1857, assigned to the island the first name of
Lopez Gonzales de Haro, reputed to be the sailing master in Eliza's
command who actually discovered the San Juan Islands. Another of his
namesakes is Haro Strait that marks the western boundary of both San
Juan County and the United States. |
