The
island and, hence, the community thereon were named for Judge Thomas
Mercer, captain of a wagon train that arrived in Seattle in 1853, and the
man who named Lake Washington and Lake Union. The judge was the
elder brother of Asa Shinn Mercer, first president of the University of
Washington. |
