was established in 1878 as Park Place by Salem Wood. In 1890 John Vanasdlen opened a post office in his store there, but called it Monroe
when postal authorities rejected the town's original name. The Great
Northern Railroad laid track a mile away, so Vanasdlen helped plat a new
townsite called Tye. The railroad selected Wales as the name of its
station there. So Vanasdlen moved the Monroe post office from Park
Place to Tye-Wales, and railroad, postal, and civic officials agreed upon
the name Monroe - a name with no known reason for its initial selection. |
