City Name
History:
|
The
harbor's name is derived from the Clallam Indian word neeah, which
was their nasal pronunciation of the name Dee-ah, chief of the Makah tribe
that lived in the area. Situated east of Cape Flattery on the Strait
of Juan de Fuca, it was named Bahia de Nunez Gaono in 1790 by the
Spanish. American fur traders subsequently called it Poverty Bay,
and in 1841 Wilkes renamed it Scarborough Harbour in honor of Capt. James
Scarborough of the Hudson's Bay Co. In 1847 Kellett re-charted the
place under its present name. |
