History:

Since
1891, site of the state soldiers' home. The town was originally
called Carbon, but there was confusion with nearby Carbonado. The
mix-up was ended in 1878 when the railroad arrived and suggested a new
name - the Native-American word orting, purported to mean
"prairie village." |
