City Name
History:
|
In
1791 Eliza named the harbor Porto de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles, or
"Port of Our Lady of the Angels." The following year
Spanish captains Galiano and Valdes shortened the name to Porto de los
Angeles, and Vancouver cut it down to its present form. The county
seat city was a federal city, similar to Washington, D.C., laid out in
1862 by executive order of President Lincoln as the site of a government
lighthouse and military reservation. |
