The
harbor on Hood Canal was named by Wilkes to honor Lt. Robert Gamble, who
was wounded in the War of 1812 sea battle between the United States
frigate President and the British Belvidere. The mill
community is a company town owned by Pope and Talbot Lumber Co. since its
inception in 1853. Port Gamble was briefly known in its formative
days as Teckalet, a Native-American word for "brightness of the
noon-day sun." |
