History:

Originally
called Black River Bridge, the present city came into being with the
discovery of coal in nearby hills by Dr. M. Bigelow in 1853. Platted
in 1876, the town was named for Capt. William Renton of the Port Blakely
Mill Company, one of the founders of the Renton Coal Co. |
