City Name History:   Resort town on the shores of the southernmost lake in the Grand Coulee. The name is derived from the bitter taste and soapy feel of the water that wind whips into a sudsy foam. The lake is of volcanic origin as evidenced by black basalt cliffs along its shore and the heavy concentration of minerals and salts in the water. To the Native-American and the pioneers, as well as today's health-seekers, the spot was famous as a health spa.
