City Name
History:
|
A
lake and a southern suburb of Tacoma bear as their name a corruption of
the Native-American word spanuch of undetermined meaning. Hudson's
Bay Company records show "two plows sent to Spanuch" April 26,
1849. More recent folklore contends that it is the reverse spelling
of the Native-American name of the lake: yawanaps, meaning "beautiful
water." |
