City Name
History:
|
Fur
traders first applied the name Spokane to the Native-Americans of the
area, to the river along which they lived, and then to the trading post,
Spokane House (1810-1826), built below Spokane Falls at the junction of
the Spokane and Little Spokane rivers. The derivation of the name
stems from the tribe's leader, who identified himself to the early
trappers as Illim-Spokane or "chief of the sun people."
Settlement of the present city site began in early 1870's, and the town
was born February 13, 1878, when James Nettle Glover filed the plat of
Spokane Falls. In 1881 the town was incorporated, and in 1891 the
name was shortened to Spokane. |
