History:

Settled
in 1866 as a trading post on marshy land at the mouth of the Stillaguamish
River, the resultant community was built on reclaimed land and called
Centerville. In 1877 merchant D.O. Pearson became postmaster and
renamed the town to honor his wife Clara's maiden name of Stanwood. |
