City Name History:   Town, creek, rapids in the Snake River, and a butte [formerly Pyramid Peak] honor Lt. Col. Edward J. Steptoe, who campaigned against marauding Native-Americans in the Walla Walla Valley in 1857. On May 17, Steptoe and 150 soldiers equipped with two howitzers were defeated by 1,000 Palouse Tribe members in the Battle of Te-Hots-Nim-Me, marked by Steptoe Memorial Park at Rosalia.
