The
oldest continuously inhabited white settlement in the state was
established in 1825 when Dr. John McLoughlin, chief factor, moved the
Hudson's Bay Company Columbia Department Headquarters upriver from Fort George
- now Astoria, Oregon - and named it to honor British explorer George
Vancouver. |
