City Name
History:
|
From
1818 to 1855 fur trappers operated a fortified trading post at the mouth
of the Walla Walla River. It was historically known as
"old" Fort Walla Walla, although the North West Fur Company
builders called it Fort Nez Perce. Following the cessation of
Native-American hostilities, the city of Walla Walla grew up around Lt.
Col. Steptoe's new fort, while the town of Wallula developed at the site
of the old fort. The town's name means the same in Walla Walla
language as the city's does in the Nez Perce tongue: "many
waters." |
