The
town was given the name that Wilkes ascribed to a Native-American village
above The Dalles on the Columbia River. Purportedly the name was
that of a long-dead chief. However, the Bureau of American Ethnology
reports that the tribal name, in two different Native-American dialects,
refers to a "species of flea or louse." |
