City Name
History:

Yakima
City was incorporated December 1883, and a year later had 400
residents. In 1884 the Northern Pacific Railroad platted North
Yakima four miles north and offered to give Yakima City residents an
equal amount of property and to move their buildings without charge if
they would transfer to the new town. A majority of the citizens
agreed, and in 90 days, during the winter and spring of 1884-85, over
100 buildings - including a bank, hotels, stores, and other business
structures - were moved by wagon, skids and rollers to the new
community. On January 12, 1886 the city was chartered and
simultaneously named the county seat. An actof the state
legislature effective January 1, 1918 dropped the word "North"
from the city's name and changed the name of the older town (Yakima
City) to Union Gap. |
