Stampede Pass

Date Driven Over:   Wednesday, August 24, 2005
Located On:   Forest Service Road 54
County:   King & Kittitas
Drove Over With:   Michelle & High School Jen
Elevation:   3,700 Feet
Pass Name History:   This pass was discovered in 1881
by Virgil C. Bogue as part of the
route survey for construction of the
Northern Pacific Railroad over the
Cascade Range. A foreman's effort
to speed up construction work with a
"no work, no eat" edict precipitated
a stampede of laborers back to the
valley and resulted in the naming of
the pass, and eventually a railroad
tunnel and the small community near
its west entrance.
Comments:   There was no elevation sign on my
first visit to this pass. So I returned
two years later with my Sister and
my own sign.
